Chemical analysis is usually required to distinguish ankerite from ferroan dolomite, although ankerite may be discriminated from pure dolomite by X-ray diffractometry. It is identical to dolomite in thin section, and gives a turquoise color with alizarin red-S and potassium ferricyanide mixed stain (see “Stains”).
